Known as the Miracle Tree because of its many uses, Baobab trees are native to Africa and are being proliferated to benefit the native people. These majestic trees are providing a much needed resources and nutrition to African people. They store thousands of gallons of life-giving water inside the swollen trunk, the leaves are eaten both fresh and as a dry powder, the fruit is nutritious possibly having more vitamin C than oranges and exceeding the calcium content of cow's milk. Also known as "sour gourd" or "monkey's bread", the dry fruit pulp separated from seeds and fibers is eaten directly or mixed into porridge or milk. In Malawi, the fruit pulp is used to make a nutrient-rich juice. The seeds are roasted for eating, or pounded to extract a rich oil. The tree also provides a source of fiber, dye, and fuel. Local people claim the tree also has a myriad of medicinal uses. Truly an amazing tree! Larger trees are reputed to up to 6,000 years old, and in African lore they are called the upside-down tree since after creation, each of the animals was given a tree to plant and the hyena planted the baobab upside-down. Known to many children in the US from The Lion King, as Rafiki makes his home in one.
