Setting a Budget for your Engagement ring:

A smart place to start is setting a budget for your engagement ring. You’ll hear a lot of suggestions with the most popular being you should spend about two month salary for her ring. Let us be the first to tell you this may or may not be the best advice. If you are in school or paying off student loans the “two month” guideline for an engagement ring probably isn’t a good idea. Our advice is to spend what you feel comfortable with given your current economic position. If it’s two months salary than so be it. Just be sure that you’re doing your best to get the prettiest diamond engagement ring you can afford. Once you decide what price range you want to be in your going to allocate the majority of your budget to the diamond and the rest to the mounting.

Go to our Loose Diamond Search and select the shape you think she will love and then pick your price range. This will give you a whole list of diamonds within your budget. If you sort the list from largest diamond to smallest you’ll see the biggest diamond you can get for your money. If you sort from smallest to largest you’ll see the highest quality you can get for your money. As a general guideline most people end up somewhere in the middle with a nice blend of quality and size. Choosing a Setting:

Once you’ve learned all about diamonds and have decided what you’re going to spend on the center diamond you can start looking at engagement ring settings. A setting, also called a mounting or semi-mount if it has sidestones, is the actual metal ring that holds your diamond & slips around her finger. Sometimes you’ll get lucky and she’s shown you a picture in magazine of exactly what she wants. If not don’t despair it’s always a safe bet to ask her to marry you with the biggest and best diamond you can afford in a simple solitaire setting!

If you don't know what she wants, look at her other jewelry: does she wear very little, or bold dramatic pieces that draw attention? What about her clothes & hair: Simple, sporty, bold or wild?
